In Saxony, the number of doctors in practices has recently risen slightly. At the end of last year, there were just under 229 doctors and psychotherapists per 100,000 inhabitants, according to an analysis by the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KBV). A year earlier, the doctor density in the state was just under 223 doctors per 100,000 inhabitants.
In a state comparison, the proportion of women in Saxony's medical profession was rather high. With 58.9 percent female doctors, the state ranked third behind Berlin and Hamburg. At the same time, only 8.7 percent of doctors and psychotherapists were older than 65 - together with Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the lowest proportion in Germany.
All over Germany, too, more doctors were counted. At the end of last year, there were 191,875 doctors and psychotherapists licensed to provide care to people with statutory health insurance. This was 2,324 more than at the end of 2024. The proportion of part-time doctors was 40 percent.
