In Saxony, 139 people have died from drug use in the past six years. Instead of deterrence and punishment, the Free State should focus on effective prevention, say the Greens.

The number of drug-related deaths in Saxony reached its highest level in six years in 2024. 28 people died last year as a result of drug use, according to a minor interpellation by the Greens in the Saxon state parliament. This compares to 20 deaths in 2023. Since 2019, a total of 139 people have died in Saxony as a result. By far the most common cause of death is the use of crystal meth, followed by heroin.

Greens want more prevention instead of punishment and deterrence

"Each of these deaths is a serious loss and leaves families, friends and loved ones in mourning. Saxony finally needs a modern and humane drug and addiction policy," said MP Christin Melcher (Greens). "Instead of deterrence and punishment, the Free State should focus on effective prevention, early help and consistent harm reduction."

Despite a significant increase in drug addicts, there are hardly any or no services in some districts, she said. The Greens believe that access to counseling and support services directly at places of consumption is necessary. In addition, controlled spaces for drug use should be expanded beyond the major cities, for example through mobile services.

More therapy places for crystal addicts

The Greens also propose model projects for mobile drug checking in order to detect dangerous admixtures such as fentanyl at an early stage. There should also be more inpatient treatment places for crystal addicts, especially for parents with children and people in prison. Crystal meth is a particular problem in Saxony. The drug is mainly obtained from the Czech Republic.

"Harm reduction is not an invitation to use, it saves lives. Consumption takes place whether we want it to or not. Our goal must be to keep the health risks as low as possible," emphasized Melcher. Regulated and controlled services such as drug consumption rooms would enable direct counseling for those affected and provide first aid in emergencies.
