The first local authorities have issued warnings about the oak processionary moth. Where the moth is found - and why it is not just a problem for trees.

According to experts, the oak processionary moth is spreading in Saxony. Not only can the moth strip entire trees bare, but its caterpillars also pose a danger to humans. Where is the species mainly found so far and what behaviors should be observed?

Occurrence in North Saxony and the Elbe Valley

According to the state enterprise Sachsenforst, there are two main areas so far: the district of North Saxony and the Elbe Valley. In northern Saxony, the moth has presumably spread from Saxony-Anhalt and Brandenburg, while it is thought to have been introduced to the area around Dresden. Municipalities such as Taucha and Eilenburg have recently issued warnings about the oak processionary moth.

Spread in Saxony?

According to the forest condition survey, the problem has recently increased in Saxony. "In recent years, a spread or increase in intensity has been observed," said a Sachsenforst spokesperson. Climate change, with longer dry and warm phases in spring and summer, is helping the insect.

How does the oak processionary moth damage trees?

In the neighboring state of Saxony-Anhalt, the moth has completely stripped thousands of oak trees bare in recent years. Last year, the so-called clear feeding was also registered in some places in northern Saxony. According to Sachsenforst, the damage to the forest has so far been harmless. For this reason, the animal is only being fought "selectively" in the state forest at most.

"Only multiple clear feeding of the leaves of previously vital oaks in combination with other pests or extreme weather conditions such as late frost or drought can lead to the death of trees. Trees that are already significantly damaged can die to a greater extent as a result of clear-cutting," it said.

What is the problem for people?

The caterpillars of the butterfly species have poisonous stinging hairs from the third larval stage onwards, which can lead to allergic reactions such as itching, rashes, eye irritation or shortness of breath if they come into contact with the skin or are inhaled. The caterpillars, which are up to three centimetres long, are brown-yellow or gray-black. Their nests are round webs that can reach the size of a soccer.

How to behave

In general, people should avoid areas where the oak processionary moth is found. "Be vigilant in infested areas and keep a safe distance from trees with webs on them," advises Sachsenforst.

If you do come into contact with the stinging hairs, you should change your clothes immediately and take a thorough shower. Clothes should then be washed at a temperature of at least 60 degrees. If you experience any health complaints, you should consult a doctor.
