Taking medical advice via video consultation has become somewhat more common again in Saxony. After a decline in the years following the coronavirus pandemic, the number of billed video consultations has recently risen again, as the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians in Saxony announced on request.
In 2021, there were around 67,600 such patient contacts in Saxony. In the following year, the figure was just under 51,900, then around 56,600 in 2023. Last year, the number climbed to 73,600. No valid data is currently available for 2025.
Comeback of digital consultations
According to the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians, around 3.058 doctors and psychotherapists had a permit to conduct video consultations at the end of 2024, compared to 3,096 at the end of August 2025. These include 694 GPs and 1,278 psychotherapists.
According to the data, video consultations are particularly popular with GPs, specialists in internal medicine and psychotherapists. "The group of urology specialists is currently the least likely to use video consultations," it said. An evaluation by districts and independent cities is not carried out.
Investments are worthwhile - despite hurdles
"The increasing use by practices shows that more and more doctors and psychotherapists are willing to integrate video consultations into their everyday practice," explained the KV. Although this involves investment, further training and technical effort, the increased numbers show a trend whereby more and more practices are using the service in the interests of patients.
