The current flu season has so far led to 45 deaths in Saxony. Affected are 25 women and 20 men between the ages of 58 and 96, according to the latest report from the State Investigation Institute. Since the turn of the year, the number of confirmed infections has been rising again, but recently at a rather moderate rate. In the third calendar week alone, almost 2,800 cases were reported - an increase of 13 percent.
"All age groups are now affected, with infections being diagnosed in young children and schoolchildren in particular, but many older adults are also affected," said the state testing institute. According to the report, health authorities are reporting an increase in cases of illness in retirement homes and hospitals, as well as in schools and daycare centers.
According to the experts, the incidence of coronavirus infections has so far been lower than that of influenza. The number of confirmed cases of Sars-Cov-2 fell by 35 percent in the third calendar week. However, 93 deaths have been recorded since the start of the season: 32 women and 61 men aged 53 to 99 years.
