Cutting-edge medicine, high-tech laboratories and a helipad: the new Dresden Heart Center is set to treat more than 25,000 people a year. The foundation stone has now been laid.

Dresden is to have a new heart center by the end of 2029. Around 300 million euros have been budgeted for the new building with 220 beds, operating theaters, laboratories and research facilities, with half of the funds coming from the state of Saxony, according to the sponsor Sana Kliniken AG. The foundation stone was laid on Friday. The heart center is located at the Dresden University Hospital.

Center to have an impact beyond Saxony

Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU) emphasized the supra-regional importance of the project: "The new Dresden Heart Center is a strong signal for the future of medical care in Saxony." The new building strengthens Dresden and the Free State as a location for cutting-edge medicine, research and innovation with appeal far beyond the state's borders.

Six operating theatres and state-of-the-art equipment

The Heart Center is being built on an area of around 18,000 square meters and will be part of the Saxony Health Cluster of Sana Kliniken AG. In addition to patient rooms, the new five-storey building will include six operating theatres, five cardiac catheterization laboratories, state-of-the-art imaging, a central emergency room, research facilities and a helipad. The center is expected to treat more than 25,000 patients every year.

A "time capsule" was also placed in the foundation stone: it contains selected documents and objects from the present - including a book with personal greetings from staff and patients. This is intended to give future generations an insight into the time when the center was founded.
