In Saxony, medical students can get ahead even without a top A-level. In return, they commit to a future in the countryside.

If you want to become a family doctor in Saxony, you can apply for a place to study medicine via the rural doctor quota until February 28. This year, 40 places are available outside of the so-called Numerus Clausus, according to the Saxony State Directorate. Applicants commit to working in the countryside for at least ten years after completing their studies and specialist training.

The study locations are Leipzig, Dresden and Chemnitz. "The program is aimed at committed young people who would like to work as GPs in the rural regions of Saxony after completing their medical studies," explained Béla Bélafi, President of the Saxony State Directorate.

If admission to degree courses is restricted, admission is determined by the A-level grade (numerus clausus). Most recently, the numerus clausus for medical studies in the Free State was 1.1. 6.5 percent of medical study places have been allocated in this way since the winter semester 2022/2023.
