The new Carolabrücke bridge in Dresden is taking shape—at least on paper. A panel of experts has evaluated the four submitted designs and has settled on a favorite.

The expert panel tasked with the reconstruction of the collapsed Carola Bridge has selected a favorite from among the four submitted designs. The ranking was recently presented to the Building Committee: According to the ranking, the design by the architectural firms Leonhardt, Andrä und Partner and Knight Architects took first place.

However, a final decision has not yet been made. The city council is expected to make the decision in early September. Until then, citizens will also have a say in the matter.

Committee: All submitted designs are of high quality

The committee, led by Professor Steffen Marx (Dresden University of Technology), emphasized that “each of the submitted designs is of very high quality and would allow for low-risk project implementation.” The preliminary review had already shown that all four designs meet the requirements defined in the call for bids by the State Capital of Dresden and are feasible. “Nevertheless, the expert committee was able to clearly identify the best, second-best, third-best, and fourth-best bridge designs.”

Experts praise “sleek and transparent bridge design”

In the committee’s view, the work by the design consortium LAP and Knight Architects best meets the requirements and constraints of a replacement bridge. “The well-designed, slender, and transparent bridge structure blends pleasantly and unobtrusively into Dresden’s historic old town. Furthermore, all types of use and requirements—both on and under the bridge and in the area of the abutments—have been carefully considered and resolved,” the statement said. The lattice-like design of the so-called vaulted areas—the suggested bridge arches—achieves a distinct identity as the “new Dresden Carolabrücke” and thus successfully continues the developmental history of both predecessor structures.

Decision to be made on September 3

In its evaluation, the expert panel considered criteria including urban planning, architecture, historic preservation, traffic, structural engineering, construction time, costs, economic viability, and approvability. The experts’ assessment serves as a technical recommendation and decision-making aid for the Carolabrücke Reconstruction Advisory Committee and the City Council. On September 3, 2026, the city council is scheduled to decide on the continued engagement of a planning team.

The former Carolabrücke in Dresden consisted of three bridge spans. On the night of September 11, 2024, the section of the bridge used by trams and pedestrians collapsed unexpectedly. No one was injured. However, the other parts of the bridge were so severely damaged that it had to be completely demolished. The cause of the collapse is believed to be corrosion, which led to the failure of the tension members.
