After extensive renovation work, the terrarium at Leipzig Zoo will open this Saturday (September 27). Behind the listed façade, a modern building with habitats for snakes, tortoises, alligators and lizards has been created, as the zoo announced. Guests are taken on a journey through evolution and the transition from life in the water to life on land.
Rare offspring
Young Komodo dragons, which hatched after around 200 days in August, will also be on display for the first time. According to the zoo, the breeding of this endangered lizard species is a rarity throughout Europe. Komodo dragons are the largest lizards living today and reach a length of up to three meters when fully grown.
The eggs are incubated at a constant temperature of 31 degrees Celsius for six months. As cannibalism is common among Komodo dragons, the hatched young dragons are initially kept separate from the adults.
