Field hamster offspring spotted in northern Saxony

In May, field hamsters were released into the wild as part of a species conservation project in a field in northern Saxony - now the rodents have had their first offspring. A few days ago, the young animals were spotted on wildlife cameras, Leipzig Zoo announced.

This is the next milestone in saving the endangered animals after their release into the wild.

The hamsters were bred at Leipzig Zoo. Together with the Saxon Ministry of the Environment and other partners, the zoo is participating in the project to protect hamsters.

At the breeding station, hamsters were born again this year so that, ideally, animals could also be released into the wild in 2025.
