More workload instead of relief: The education trade union GEW has failed the efforts of the Ministry of Education to combat the shortage of teachers.

The Education and Science Union (GEW) has given the Ministry of Education's package of measures to combat the shortage of teachers, which was introduced a year ago, a poor grade. "The package has neither solved the shortage of teachers nor improved working conditions at schools in the Free State," the union stated in Leipzig. Instead of sustainable solutions, the result is an increased workload, loss of quality and increasing frustration among employees.

"The way in which the package of measures was announced a year ago was already a serious mistake. The trade unions and experts from the school sector were not seriously involved," emphasized GEW head Claudia Maaß. Those who make education policy without the people in the schools may produce regional effects, but certainly no fundamental solutions.

Union: Teachers' workload has increased

The union accused the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs of focusing on increasing teachers' workloads with its measures. At the same time, important instruments to reduce the workload have been cut or removed.

Even before this, however, teachers in Saxony had already systematically had to work beyond their working hours. "Most teachers in Saxony have been working to the limit for years and work millions of hours of unpaid overtime every year."

The GEW therefore believes a change of course is necessary and is calling for a comprehensive education package to be developed together with trade unions, parent and student representatives. This includes more school administration assistants and multi-professional teams to relieve teachers, protection against secondments for older teachers and legally compliant working time recording for all teachers.

"More pressure on teachers will not solve the teacher shortage"

"One year after the package of measures was announced, it is clear that more pressure on teachers will not solve the teacher shortage. Sustainable solutions can only be found together with the people who work in schools every day," concluded Maaß.

A year ago, the Ministry of Education announced that it wanted to halve the shortage of teaching staff at Saxon schools with a package of measures. In the fall of 2025, the ministry saw the first improvements.
