Saxony plans to combat extremist tendencies among students with an action plan. Minister of Education Conrad Clemens (CDU) stated that there has been a sharp increase in so-called “special incidents” at schools.
In 2014, there were 55 such incidents in schools across the Free State; by 2024, that number had risen to 1,644. The number of far-right incidents stood at 91 in 2019 and rose to 245 in 2025.
Action plan includes 15 measures
Police crime statistics recorded exactly 100 politically motivated crimes committed at schools in 2021; by 2025, that number had risen to 335.
“We don’t want to leave schools to deal with this development on their own,” Clemens said. The action plan comprises 15 measures and is primarily focused on prevention. For example, teacher training is to be expanded, and schools are to receive guidance on security protocols. In addition, the social studies course is to become a required subject in 10th grade as well. Another key point is media literacy. Justice Minister Constanze Geiert (CDU) also emphasized that combating extremism requires a society-wide effort.
