Saxony will receive an additional 193.5 million euros over the next four years for the renovation of universities, scientific institutions and the expansion of daycare facilities. This was agreed by the Joint Science Conference of the federal and state governments (GWK).
The money comes from the federal government's 500 billion euro debt-financed special fund for infrastructure and climate protection. For Saxony, this results in an annual budget of around 48.4 million euros. The state itself will decide how much of this will be allocated to childcare, universities and science.
Criticism came from the Education and Science Union (GEW). Four billion euros nationwide is "far below what is needed", said GEW board member Andreas Keller. Investments in the three-digit billion range are needed. The German Rectors' Conference (HRK) also commented accordingly, but welcomed the agreement in principle.
