In the freezing cold, employees of the Meißen winegrowers' cooperative harvested frozen grapes for ice wine on Tuesday night. Grapes of the Cabernet Blanc variety were harvested on around 3000 square meters at just under minus eleven degrees, as the cooperative announced. Temperatures of at least minus seven degrees are required to be able to harvest this rarity, which is coveted by wine connoisseurs. The grapes for the ice wine should be frozen for several days during the harvest if possible.

Wine lovers will have to be patient before they can drink the ice wine, however, as the popular wine has to mature for several months after fermentation. With around 1500 winegrowers, the Sächsische Winzergenossenschaft Meißen is the largest wine producer in the Free State. Grapes for ice wine were last harvested here in 2021.
