The first potatoes from a surplus harvest in Saxony have arrived at the food banks. According to the state association of food banks, the distribution points in Torgau, Oschatz and Mittweida were supplied first.
Next week, further crops are to be delivered to Dresden, Grimma, Leipzig and Plauen. "This delivery is a real blessing for the people we supply," explained regional chairman Stephan Trutschler.
The potatoes come from Osterland Agrar Gesellschaft in Frohburg. After a good harvest, the company was left with around 4,000 tons. With the help of media companies such as the "Leipziger Volkszeitung" and the "Sächsische Zeitung", the potatoes are distributed free of charge to people in need. The food banks in Berlin are also set to benefit.
