Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe is to receive several million euros for a modern streetcar depot. The aim: a more efficient and environmentally friendly streetcar fleet for the future.

The Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe (LVB) is to receive funding of 8.6 million euros for the new construction of the Heiterblick streetcar builder's workshop. As announced by the State Office for Road Construction and Transport, further funding of up to 34.9 million euros has also been promised over the next three years.

The project includes the construction of a modern workshop, the expansion of the energy center, the conversion and energy-efficient refurbishment of a building and the construction of a bogie warehouse. Bogies are the running gear of rail vehicles.

This investment is intended to sustainably improve the maintenance and operation of Leipzig's streetcar fleet, the company said. "With the new workshop, we are creating the basis for a modern and efficient streetcar fleet in Leipzig," said Saskia Tietje, President of the State Office.

The funding is based on the guidelines of the Saxon Ministry of Transport for the allocation of funding in local public transport.
