Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz has welcomed the wage agreement at Volkswagen as a "good, socially acceptable solution". "These are not easy times for Volkswagen employees," said the SPD politician in a statement. However, despite all the hardships, the compromise reached by the collective bargaining partners ensures that the Group and its employees have a secure future. Last but not least, the agreement shows that Germany remains an important automotive and industrial location.
In the evening, Volkswagen and IG Metall had announced an agreement in their wage dispute. Among other things, it provides for the reduction of 35,000 jobs by 2030. However, there are to be no plant closures or compulsory redundancies.
Economy Minister Robert Habeck said that every job that could not be saved was a loss. "We must now work together to renew and strengthen the competitiveness of the automotive industry and give new impetus to the ramp-up of electromobility," the Green politician said in a statement.
