A new slaughterhouse for pigs is set to go into operation in the district of Central Saxony in spring 2024. The plan is to slaughter and cut up 60 pigs a week in Königshain-Wiederau, Genießergenossenschaft Sachsen eG announced on Monday. The meat is to be processed in partner companies. According to the information provided, the animals come from a neighboring stable so that there are no long transport routes. The first animals were housed there in August.
Saxony's farmers have long complained about a lack of slaughter capacity in the state. The state farmers' association therefore presented a feasibility study on the construction of a slaughterhouse in the Chemnitz region at the beginning of the year. However, this involves far higher animal numbers than the cooperative project in Central Saxony. There was talk of around 4600 pigs and around 400 cattle to be processed per week in a one-shift operation. The study speaks of investments of more than 35 million euros that would be necessary and up to 70 new jobs.
