People in the capital are being called upon to help distribute around 4,000 tons of potatoes free of charge over the next few days. The potatoes are of the Agria variety, waxy, best eating quality, writes the "Berliner Morgenpost", which is organizing the campaign together with the internet search engine Ecosia. The fruit is currently stored in the warehouses of Osterland Agrar Gesellschaft south of Leipzig.
The story of these potatoes is a story about the absurdity of our food system, the newspaper continues. A trader had ordered the harvest, but when the vegetables were stored, it was clear that the supply on the market was greater than the demand. The price had fallen so sharply that it was no longer profitable for the retailer to sell. The producer was left with the harvest.
In order to save the potatoes from spoiling, Ecosia and the Morgenpost now want to distribute them free of charge in Berlin. The agricultural company will donate them, Ecosia will organize the transport to the capital and the newspaper will organize the distribution.
The company is now looking for distributors in Berlin. Specifically, they are looking for distribution points - such as private individuals, schools and daycare centres, church communities or other associations and organizations. Each collection point will receive one tonne of potatoes. Consumers can then collect them there free of charge. They are delivered by 25-ton trucks. A suitable access road must be available.
The registration deadline is January 12. The potatoes will then be delivered next week on Thursday and Friday.
