Drivers in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia can expect particularly busy roads and traffic jams over the Whitsun weekend. "Whitsun is traditionally one of the busiest travel times of the year," said the federal highway authority Autobahn GmbH. The freeways are likely to be particularly congested on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. Considerable return traffic is also expected on Whit Monday.
The reasons for this include vacations in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg as well as a school-free Tuesday after Whitsun in several northern German states. Many people therefore want to use the long weekend for short trips or vacations.
Congestion on the A4, A9 and A72 particularly high
In the three eastern German states, Autobahn GmbH expects major traffic problems, especially on the A4 and A9. On the A4, this includes the sections between Hermsdorf-Ost and Rüdersdorf, near Erfurt, Weimar and Jena and between Ronneburg and Meerane. Traffic jams can also be expected around Dresden and in the area between Nieder Seifersdorf and Kodersdorf in eastern Saxony. On the A9, the stretches between Köselitz and Vockerode and between Naumburg and Droyßig are at risk of congestion. The A72 near Zwickau and in Vogtland between Treuen and Reichenbach may also be congested.
Digital helpers and mandatory emergency lanes
Autobahn GmbH recommends finding out about the current traffic situation before setting off. A digital roadworks map and an app with real-time data should help with travel planning. In the event of traffic jams and gridlocked traffic, forming a rescue lane is mandatory - this is the only way for police and emergency services to reach their scene quickly.
Regional return traffic and delays are still to be expected on Tuesday after the long weekend.
