Five closures instead of ten: the hygiene record of restaurants in Saxony's major cities is better than last year. However, inspectors still frequently found shortcomings.

In Saxony's major cities, fewer restaurants had to close due to hygiene deficiencies in 2025. The responsible food monitoring and veterinary offices (LÜVA) in Leipzig, Dresden and Chemnitz ordered five closures last year, according to the cities' press offices. Compared to 2024, the number has therefore halved.

The authorities differentiate between minor and major violations. Operators can rectify minor defects, such as empty paper towel dispensers, immediately after being instructed without further action. If more serious violations, such as spoiled food, are found, measures such as fines or the ordering of a follow-up inspection follow.

Chemnitz with one more closure than 2024

In Chemnitz, the LÜVA temporarily banned three businesses from serving food last year. That was one more than in the previous year. The reasons were deficiencies in cleaning, product care and food handling. In total, the inspectors penalized 248 violations of the applicable regulations.

The Leipzig LÜVA ordered the closure of two restaurants in 2025 - four fewer than in 2024. The main reason was non-compliance with basic hygiene requirements. In a total of 707 inspections, deficiencies were found in 445 cases.

In Dresden, no establishment had to close last year despite more than 7,500 deficiencies being found. In 2024, inspectors found cockroaches in two cases and banned the business.

Multiple districts without closures

The districts of Görlitz, North Saxony, Central Saxony and Vogtlandkreis reported no closures of restaurants due to poor hygiene in the past two years. In the district of Bautzen, there were no closures in 2025 and one in 2024 due to insufficient order and cleanliness.

The situation was different in the district of Leipzig. There, the responsible authority ordered four temporary closures in both 2025 and 2024. The main violation was cleaning deficiencies. In the district of Zwickau, one business was affected in each of the two years. Here, too, the inspectors criticized inadequate cleaning and poor product care.
