Kaiser, the Commissioner for Eastern Germany, is calling on Volkswagen to provide a clear vision for Zwickau—and is warning of dire consequences for the East German automotive industry.

Elisabeth Kaiser (SPD), the Federal Government Commissioner for Eastern Germany, has warned the Volkswagen Group against closing the plant in Zwickau. “I expect the VW Executive Board to provide a clear vision for the future of the four VW plants in question,” Kaiser said ahead of a supervisory board meeting to discuss the planned cost-cutting measures.

With regard to eastern Germany, there must not be a massive job loss. “The consequences of a plant closure in Zwickau would be disastrous. This would deal a blow to the entire eastern German automotive industry, which is a key driver of innovation.” The discussion is already causing enormous uncertainty in the region, Kaiser told the “Leipziger Volkszeitung” and the “Sächsische Zeitung.”

The VW supervisory board is discussing further cost-cutting measures today. According to “Manager Magazin,” up to 100,000 jobs could be cut worldwide—twice as many as previously planned. Four VW Group plants in Germany are reportedly even facing closure: Hanover, Emden, Zwickau, and Neckarsulm.

Kaiser pointed to the federal government’s support for the industry. “The federal government is aware of the difficulties facing the automotive industry. The new purchase incentive for electric vehicles represents an important step toward providing support.”

At the same time, the politician spoke out in favor of further investments in the Zwickau plant: “If the German automotive industry wants to have a future, it must invest precisely where one of the most modern plants in eastern Germany has been built, with extensive expertise and a well-qualified workforce.”

Discussion about Zwickau “completely baffling”

Jens Katzek, managing director of the Leipzig-based initiative Automotive Cluster Ostdeutschland, told the two newspapers: “It is completely baffling to me how anyone can have such a discussion about Zwickau.” And: “If I were on the supervisory board, I would focus on this: How can I manufacture good products in the future? To do that, I need a pretty good team, and I need new production facilities.” Both are available in Zwickau, where the plant has been fully converted to electric mobility.
