4,000 tons of potatoes left behind - food banks benefit

A portion of the surplus 4,000 tons of potatoes from a Saxon agricultural business are to go to food banks in Saxony. A number of the crops are also to be distributed in the Altenburger Land region, according to the Saxony Food Bank Association. The delivery will be financed with money raised through fundraising campaigns by the "Leipziger Volkszeitung" and "Sächsische Zeitung" newspapers.

The fruit comes from Osterland Agrar Gesellschaft from Frohburg, south of Leipzig. The producer was stuck with the goods. A trader had ordered the potatoes, but then failed to collect them due to a drop in price caused by a good harvest. The "Berliner Morgenpost" newspaper and the internet search engine Ecosia then initially wanted to distribute the potatoes free of charge in Berlin. A short time later, the two newspapers from Saxony joined the campaign.

"No food should be thrown away while at the same time thousands of people in the two Free States are in need of help. These potatoes are urgently needed at our food banks and are definitely too good for the garbage can," explained state chairman Stephan Trutschler.
