More than 100,000 cultural monuments are maintained in Saxony: from the Zwinger Palace and the Semper Opera House in Dresden to Leipzig Central Station. Several hundred offer special events on Monument Day.

Around 700 otherwise often inaccessible monuments in Saxony are opening their doors to the public this Sunday. The occasion is the nationwide Open Monument Day, which this year is entitled "Valuable: priceless or irreplaceable?". "Our monuments are both," emphasized Infrastructure Minister Regina Kraushaar (CDU): "Priceless - because their value cannot be measured in euros and cents. And irreplaceable - which is precisely why we protect them."

Opening ceremony in Chemnitz

The Monument Day for Saxony will be opened on the site of the former Saxon Knitting Machine Factory in Chemnitz, which now offers offices, catering and space for events under the name "die fabrik". The Children's and Youth Monument Prize will also be awarded.

The range of open monuments is wide. They range from the Alte Societätsbrauerei brewery in Zittau, including a vintage car exhibition, the old prison in Meissen as part of the castle complex and the Baldauf Villa in Marienberg to the Plauen show embroidery.
