Another Commotion Over a Drone in Halle/Leipzig

A drone was spotted again near the Leipzig/Halle Airport, and two planes were diverted. On Wednesday, people in Großkugel, Saxony-Anhalt, had intended to use a commercially available drone to document renovation work on a house, a police spokesperson said. The “Leipziger Volkszeitung” had previously reported on the incident.

On the evening of August 4, a drone carrying explosives was discovered at Leipzig/Halle Airport in the security area among Ukrainian cargo planes. The Federal Prosecutor’s Office described it as a “serious attack on Germany’s transportation and logistics infrastructure.” Since the incident, there has been increased discussion nationwide about drone security at airports.

It was reported that the drone spotted most recently did not pose a threat at any time. According to the information provided, the drone did not fly onto the airport grounds. Nevertheless, two aircraft, including a vacation flight, were diverted, the police spokesperson added.

It remains unclear whether the federal detection system—which has been stationed at the airport since the explosive-carrying drone incident—played a role in Wednesday’s sighting. Großkugel is located in the immediate vicinity of the airport on the border between Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt.
