Hollywood stars and an award-winning drama from Southeast Asia: What makes the Karlovy Vary Film Festival so special—and why many visitors love its relaxed atmosphere.

The top prize at this year’s 60th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival goes to a drama from Myanmar, a crisis-stricken country in Southeast Asia. The film by director Aung Phyoe, titled “Fruit Picking,” received the Crystal Globe for Best Film in Competition at the closing gala. The film tells the story of the friendship between two young women who meet while working as seamstresses in a textile factory and develop special feelings for one another.

The top prize is worth 25,000 U.S. dollars (equivalent to just under 22,000 euros). The film festival in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic, is one of the most important in Central and Eastern Europe. The award for Best Actress went to Swiss-Czech actress Anna Schinz for her role in the world premiere of “A Happy Family.” Ghassan Saad was honored as Best Actor.

Crystal Globe for Juliette Binoche

Numerous stars and celebrities graced the red carpet in the West Bohemian spa town. French actress Juliette Binoche accepted a Crystal Globe for outstanding contributions to world cinema. The 62-year-old became known, among other things, for her role in the 1988 film adaptation of Milan Kundera’s “The Unbearable Lightness of Being.” Earlier in the film festival, Hollywood star Dustin Hoffman had also received a Crystal Globe for his lifetime achievement. The 88-year-old personally presented his 1967 debut film, *The Graduate*, in Karlovy Vary.

Visitors love the relaxed atmosphere

Founded in 1946, the film festival—which initially alternated with its Moscow counterpart—is one of the oldest in the world. Every summer, the festival attracts tens of thousands of visitors from Germany and abroad to Karlovy Vary, which is located about 100 kilometers east of Bayreuth and 70 kilometers south of Chemnitz.

The Karlovy Vary Film Festival is known for its relaxed atmosphere, which sometimes allows visitors to get up close to the stars. While the celebrities stay in luxury hotels, many young visitors spend the night in a large tent city. According to the organizers, more than 132,500 tickets were sold this year for 472 screenings.
