On March 23, 2024, the #EarthHour will once again take place worldwide. The lights will be switched off worldwide for 1 hour. Motto: Lights off, climate protection on.

This year it's once again Lights out, climate protection on. This year's Earth Hour will take place on March 23, 2024. The lights have been switched off for one hour every year in March since 2007. The aim is to draw attention to climate protection.

Where will the lights go out in Saxony?

A number of campaigns have already been planned and registered in Saxony. The lights will be switched off at the following buildings for #EarthHour:

  • Dresden: Town Hall, Gläserne Manufaktur
  • Thalheim / Erzgebirge: Town Hall
  • Chemnitz: Illumination at Karl-Marx-Kopf
  • Zwickau: Town Hall, St. Mary's Cathedral, Priest's Houses, West- and East-Westphalia. Marien cathedral, priests' houses, west and north sides of the Robert Schumann House, Robert Schumann monument, front of houses opposite the town hall, puppet theater, post mile column
  • Plauen: Town Hall including tower
  • Lößnitz: Hospital Church
  • Leipzig: Alte Waage, Altes Rathaus, Anstrahlung City-Hochhaus, Goethedenkmal, Buntgarnwerke, Fahnengruppe Neues Rathaus, Geschäftshaus Nonnenmühlgasse, Gewandhaus, Höfe am Brühl, IHK-Gebäude, Kongresshalle am Zoo, Krochhochhaus, Marktbeleuchtung Salzgäßchen, Michaeliskirche, Museum der Bildenen Künste, Naturkundemuseum, Neues Rathaus, Nikolaikirche, Nonnenmühlgasse, Opera, Peterskirche, Reformierte Kirche, Schwanenteich, Stadtbibliothek, Thomaskirche, Wintergarten Hochhaus, Zoo

A map overview of cities and municipalities that are participating in Saxony can be found on the WWF's website. Currently 551 towns are registered. Maybe there will be a few more.

And the good thing is - anyone can take part. No getting up, no getting dressed, nothing to organize and saving money at the same time. Simply switch off the lights for an hour 💡 or even longer.

Symbolism and signal effect of Earth Hour

Earth Hour is more than just a symbolic action. It is a strong signal to politicians and businesses that people are taking climate change seriously and are demanding that more consistent action is finally taken.

Meaning in the context of climate change

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time. The consequences of climate change, such as extreme weather events, rising sea levels and dwindling biodiversity, are already being felt today.

Earth Hour is an important contribution to raising public awareness of these issues. It shows that every individual can do something to protect the climate.
