Life satisfaction in Leipzig has stabilized further. Numerous citizens show satisfied ratings despite declining satisfaction with jobs.

Life satisfaction and confidence among Leipzig residents continued to stabilize last year - following recent significant declines, for example during the pandemic. This is according to the preliminary report on the municipal citizens' survey. According to the report, 71% of respondents are (very) satisfied with their lives. 57% are optimistic about the future - both roughly the same as the previous year (70% and 58% respectively).

In line with this, personal monthly net income rose comparatively sharply in 2024, by an average of around 150 euros. The current average is around EUR 1,880. The monthly household income has increased by 120 euros and now amounts to around 2,340 euros. In this context, the assessment of their own economic situation also remains constant: just over half of Leipzig residents rate their own situation as (very) good. These figures fell significantly between 2019 and 2022, but this trend has since stopped. In contrast, only a third consider the economic situation in the city to be (very) good. Compared to the positive assessments before the start of the multiple crises, this is a decline of almost 30 percentage points.

More than eight in ten Leipzig residents are (very) satisfied with the arts and culture on offer. Three quarters of citizens express a high level of satisfaction with the public green spaces and parks and more than two thirds rate the expansion of local recreation areas positively. The particularly positive assessment of these three municipal areas of life has remained at the same high level for years.

However, satisfaction with the range of jobs and the range of training and apprenticeship positions fell by 8 percentage points in each case compared to 2023. Nine out of fifteen measured satisfaction values increased slightly or remained stable compared to the previous year. Against the backdrop of an improved supply situation, significantly more Leipzig residents (41%) are satisfied or very satisfied with the range of childcare facilities. In the previous year, the figure was 18 percentage points lower. A new question concerned satisfaction with the city's healthcare provision: 43 percent of Leipzig residents are currently (very) satisfied with the medical services on offer.

This year's survey paid particular attention to the topic of transport. In terms of transport facilities and their use, 56 percent of all households have at least one car and 77 percent have at least one bicycle. 36 percent of Leipzig residents drive to work by car, while 64 percent use buses and trains, bicycles or walk.

For the municipal citizens' survey, the Office for Statistics and Elections wrote to a total of 9,000 Leipzig residents between November 2024 and January 2025 and asked for their opinions and assessments on various topics. Information on their socio-demographic and economic situation was also recorded. In the response, 3,687 questionnaires from three questionnaire variants were evaluated. This corresponds to an - adjusted - response rate of just under 43 percent.
