Kiri is leaving, Kamaroo is coming: changes are afoot for the koalas at Dresden Zoo. The swap partner comes from the Ruhr region.

The Dresden koala cub Kiri is fledging and moving to North Rhine-Westphalia. "At almost one and a half years old, she is now independent and ready to go her own way," announced Dresden Zoo. So far, Kiri has been living with her sister Janali and mother Eerin.

She was born in November 2024 and first peeked out of her mother's pouch in May 2025. Kiri will now find a new home at Duisburg Zoo. There she will live together with several female koalas. She will be accompanied by a keeper who has known her for a long time to help her settle in.

Kamaroo to provide koala offspring in Dresden

For Dresden Zoo, Kiri's move is not just a farewell. In return, a new male koala is coming to the Saxon state capital: the almost four-year-old Kamaroo, who previously lived at Duisburg Zoo. The last male koala in Dresden was put to sleep at the beginning of January due to a tumor.

Koalas are native to Australia and feed almost exclusively on eucalyptus leaves. The males are reportedly solitary animals. That's why Kamaroo moves into the enclosure next to the two females. "However, they can hear, see and smell each other," emphasizes the zoo. "Koala males and females only meet for mating and then they go their separate ways again." The new arrival will be on display for visitors to Dresden from the first weekend in May.
