Greens Call for New Approaches to Dealing with Raccoons

The Greens in the Saxon State Parliament are advocating for the peaceful coexistence of humans and raccoons. Following a hearing in the state parliament, Green Party politician Wolfram Günther acknowledged that dealing with raccoons creates a tension between animal welfare and nature conservation and also leads to conflicts in human settlements. However, he argued that hunting cannot be the only solution. An approach is needed that is effective while also taking animal welfare into account.

Hunting associations, in particular, advocate for the culling of raccoons. There are also voices in politics supporting this. Raccoons have now spread as far as cities in Germany. According to experts, raccoons, as an invasive species, threaten native animals such as birds and amphibians.

Raccoons will not disappear from the cultural landscape

According to Günther, it is unwise to generalize. “Problems generally occur locally. For native breeding birds and amphibians, the raccoon is essentially just one predator among many, but it can certainly become a problem in certain regions. At the same time, we have to be honest: the raccoon is not going to disappear from our cultural landscape.” 

The call for culling as a supposedly simpler solution falls short and could even exacerbate problems. The goal is to “organize a pragmatic coexistence with the raccoon.”

“This requires effective protection of endangered species and a diverse package of measures instead of superficial solutions,” Günther emphasized. He felt the expert hearing confirmed his view that raccoon management in Saxony must not focus solely on hunting. “Non-lethal measures must take priority.”

The Greens also consider better public education to be necessary

“We have no evaluation of hunting management in Saxony. High cull numbers are offset by a lack of performance monitoring. Instead, we should focus on habitat management, such as raccoon-proof nesting aids, protection against climbing, or securing buildings and properties,” said Günther. He also noted that better public education on how to properly interact with raccoons is necessary. 

“The hearing showed that the options of castration or sterilization can, in principle, be compatible with applicable EU law and that their implementation lies within the Free State’s authority,” Günther emphasized in conclusion. This opens up another option for regulating populations in the long term while also adhering to animal welfare standards.
