Mia, the lynx, is beginning her adventure in the Western Ore Mountains. What her tracking data might reveal about her new life. She is the tenth lynx to be released into the wild in Saxony since 2024.

Another lynx has been released into the wild in Saxony. Mia, the lynx, ventured into her new habitat in the forests of the Western Ore Mountains in the Eibenstock Forest, according to the State Office for the Environment, Geology, and Agriculture. Since 2024, Mia is the tenth lynx to be released into the wild in Saxony.

The lynx was born last year along with two siblings in the outdoor enclosure at the Falkenstein National Park Center in Bavaria. In the large, near-natural outdoor enclosure, the animals retain their natural wariness of humans. This set the stage for Mia from the very beginning to be released into the wild at about one year of age.

Before release, all lynx are fitted with GPS collar transmitters. The collars regularly transmit location data, providing information on where the animals are and whether they encounter one another. After about a year, the collars detach automatically, so monitoring is then largely carried out using wildlife cameras.
