New mountain bike park, more foreign guests and a cultural festival in winter: Saxon Switzerland is focusing on fresh ideas for holidaymakers in 2026.

Saxon Switzerland has recorded a good year for tourism in 2025. Accommodation providers had registered a total of 1.5 million overnight stays by the end of October, according to the tourism association for the Elbe Sandstone Mountains in Pirna. This is only 2.1 percent less than in the same period of the record year 2019. The average length of stay in the region is 3.5 days. The statistics only include establishments with ten or more beds. It is estimated that a third were added by small guesthouses and vacation apartments.

A lot of rain in July spoiled the balance

The months of May and April were particularly pleasing - in both months, the number of overnight stays was around 4 percent higher than the comparable figures for 2019, the report continued. In July, however, the figure was 19 percent lower. "The rainy July clouds the balance. Apart from that, the figures are very good," said District Administrator Michael Geisler (CDU), head of the tourism association.

According to Geisler, there was no decline in the entire region when the Elbe bridge in Bad Schandau had to be closed. After a section of Dresden's Carola Bridge collapsed in September 2024, all major bridges in the Free State were checked for their load-bearing capacity. The defects on the Elbe bridge in Bad Schandau were so severe that it initially had to be completely closed in November 2024.

Holidaymakers should also visit lesser-known areas

According to Geisler, holidaymakers should in future be directed more towards those areas of Saxon Switzerland that are not so well known. Mass tourism is not always a good thing, said the district administrator. The aim is to draw attention to sights that are perhaps only known to insiders. However, the conditions for this, such as sufficient parking spaces, must also be created.

Saxon Switzerland wants to attract more foreign tourists

Saxon Switzerland also wants to attract more tourists from abroad - from Denmark, for example. Deutsche Bahn, together with partners in Denmark and the Czech Republic, has announced the launch of a direct Eurocity connection from Copenhagen via Berlin to Prague with a stop in Bad Schandau in May.

Cross-border mountain bike park to be created in 2026

The cross-border mountain bike park "Borderless Trails" is set to become a paradise for cyclists this year. The plan is to create 15 individual trails of varying degrees of difficulty with a total length of 35 kilometers on both sides of the Saxon-Czech border. The project is being funded by the EU. A marketing campaign for the Elbe Cycle Path is also planned.

New edition of the "Wintersterne Sächsische Schweiz" cultural festival

The "Wintersterne Sächsische Schweiz" cultural festival has been announced as a highlight of the winter season. After its successful debut in 2025, there will be a new edition from January 30 to February 8. Between the kick-off with the "Hohnsteiner Märchenfunkeln" and the finale at the "Pirnaer Winterhofnacht", 15 towns and municipalities are putting on more than 30 events.

"Malerweg" celebrates its 20th birthday this year

In addition, the 20th anniversary of perhaps the most popular hiking trail in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains is to be celebrated. The 116-kilometre-long "Malerweg" is based on paths that were already known to Romantic artists and often captured in their paintings. It was opened in its current form in 2006 - as a circular hiking trail with eight daily stages. Information boards provide information about the works of art created along the trail.
