One of the reasons for the increase is the global impact of the war in Iran. Which products besides gasoline and heating oil are also more expensive.

Higher energy prices as a result of the Iran war have pushed up the inflation rate in Saxony significantly. Consumer prices in March 2026 were 2.8 percent higher than in the same month last year, according to preliminary figures from the State Statistical Office in Kamenz. In February 2026, the inflation rate was 2.3 percent, as it was in January.

In particular, the current developments on the crude oil market led to significant price increases for heating oil (41.5 percent) and fuel purchases (18.6 percent). Without the influence of these items, annual inflation would have been just 2.2 percent.

Easter will also be more expensive

With a view to the Easter holidays, it was reported that prices for many items had increased year-on-year - such as eggs (20.2 percent), coffee beans (21.1 percent), chocolates (8.2 percent) and chocolate bars (7.8 percent).

While the purchase of fresh fruit (minus 0.8 percent) or vegetables, including potatoes (1.0 percent) was almost possible at the same conditions as the previous year, prices for non-alcoholic drinks (5.1 percent) increased more than those for alcoholic drinks (2.0 percent) in a year-on-year comparison.

Compared to February, consumer prices in Saxony are expected to have risen by 1.1 percent in March. According to the statisticians, this was due to the transition to the spring/summer collection of clothing and shoes (6.0 percent) as well as higher prices for transport (4.2 percent).
