An explosive-laden drone at Leipzig/Halle Airport recently highlighted the danger. Research into technologies to improve drone safety is now set to begin in Saxony-Anhalt.

How can dangerous drones be better detected and defended against? A new research center for drone safety will open in Saxony-Anhalt on Tuesday (10:30 a.m.). At the German Aerospace Center (DLR) site in Cochstedt in the Salzlandkreis district, new technologies will be developed and tested under realistic conditions.

Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU), Federal Research Minister Dorothee Bär (CSU), and Saxony-Anhalt’s Minister-President Sven Schulze (CDU) are expected to attend the opening. According to those involved, this facility—in collaboration with the DLR site in Braunschweig—will be the only one of its kind in Germany.

Explosive-laden drone highlights the danger

Just how timely this issue is was recently demonstrated at Leipzig/Halle Airport. There, a modified drone loaded with explosives was discovered among several Ukrainian cargo planes. The Federal Prosecutor’s Office described it as a “serious attack on Germany’s transport and logistics infrastructure.”

Following the incident, federal and state interior ministers called for faster progress in establishing drone defense capabilities. The new technology center is part of a broader strategy, which also includes a drone defense unit within the Federal Police and a joint federal-state drone defense center.
