Due to construction work at the Gößnitz interchange, the Leipzig-Zwickau rail line will be closed there until mid-December. As a result, rail passengers must transfer to buses between Gößnitz and Zwickau and allow for more travel time overall, according to Deutsche Bahn. Similar disruptions are also expected soon on the routes from Gera to Altenburg and Glauchau.
Construction work will be concentrated during the closure period
According to Deutsche Bahn, the line closures will help concentrate construction work. Plans include replacing tracks and switches, as well as working on overhead lines. In addition, bridges will be installed and retaining walls erected. At the same time, work is being carried out at the Werdau station, including the extension of passing tracks and the replacement of switches and signaling systems.
All of this is part of the expansion of the Saxony-Franconia Main Line, which runs from Dresden and Leipzig to southern Germany. In the future, trains are expected to travel at speeds of up to 160 km/h on this route, and the line will be used more extensively for interregional freight transport from the seaports to the south. In addition, according to Deutsche Bahn, the current work is laying the groundwork for the new direct Plauen–Leipzig connection, which will begin with the next timetable change.
