The world's largest online mail order company Amazon is closing its air freight center at Leipzig/Halle Airport. After a corresponding adjustment of the logistics network, the closure of the Amazon Air site is planned, a spokesman for the U.S. company justified the move on Tuesday. According to the company, 400 employees will be affected by the closure. The timing of the planned closure is still open, according to the information. Previously, the "Bild" newspaper had reported on the planned Aus.
Affected employees and female employees are offered the opportunity to switch to other Amazon locations. Amazon also operates a distribution center at the airport. The group stressed that it would continue to operate at Leipzig/Halle Airport and use it in its European logistics network.
Amazon Air's air freight center had been opened in 2020 to enable faster deliveries. During the Corona pandemic, Amazon had greatly expanded its logistics network and significantly increased site density in southern Europe, it said. As a result, items could be placed closer to customers, eliminating the need for some flight connections from Leipzig.
