An 18-year-old veers off the road in his car and crashes into a tree. His passenger is seriously injured. During the investigation of the accident, it turns out that alcohol was a factor.

An 18-year-old novice driver under the influence of alcohol veered off the road in the Bautzen district and crashed into a tree. His passenger, who was the same age, was seriously injured and had to be taken to a hospital, according to police.

According to reports, the young man first struck the guardrail several times at a roundabout early Saturday morning. He then drove straight across the median, broke through another guardrail, and veered off the road. About 150 meters from the roadway, the car collided head-on with a tree.

The 18-year-old driver was uninjured. According to police, a breathalyzer test showed a blood alcohol level equivalent to 0.7 per mille. Officers confiscated his driver’s license and ordered a blood test.

The novice driver is now under investigation for, among other things, endangering road traffic and negligent bodily injury. He is also suspected of fleeing the scene of an accident—though police did not initially disclose why. Property damage is estimated at around 20,000 euros.
