At the Leuschnerplatz station in Leipzig’s City Tunnel, traveling underground will be more convenient than ever before. According to Deutsche Bahn, Europe’s longest escalator with a moving center platform will be installed there. The 55-meter-long escalator will cover a height difference of about 20 meters, as Deutsche Bahn announced. This will make it more convenient for passengers to reach the station. Until now, two escalators arranged one after the other have transported people down or up. In between, there was a stone platform that passengers had to walk across on their own. In the future, they will simply be able to stand still and let the moving central platform carry them across. Deutsche Bahn describes the system as unique in Europe. In addition to the Leuschnerplatz station, the Bayerischer Bahnhof and Markt stops are also being modernized. A total of eleven escalators and five elevators are being replaced. The existing systems have been in operation for about 13 years and now need to be replaced, officials said. According to the railway company, the total cost amounts to 12.5 million euros. The modernization is scheduled to be completed by next spring. Copyright 2026, dpa (www.dpa.de). All rights reserved
