Zoo Hoyerswerda counted 1251 animals of 121 species during the annual inventory. Successful offspring were recorded, but there were also losses.

Counted, measured, weighed: Hoyerswerda Zoo has done a head count and has come up with 1251 animals of 121 species. During the annual inventory, the health of the animals was also checked, the zoo announced on Thursday. The number of species increased slightly over the course of the year, with the number of individuals also increasing by 379. "This is mainly due to the increase in the stock in the aquaterrarium and the addition of the spectacled penguins," explained zoo director Eugène Bruins.

The zoo reported successful offspring, including servals, meerkats, jumping tamarins and rock squirrels. Two little owl chicks were returned to a reintroduction project. The ibexes and Bennett's kangaroos each gave birth to two young animals. However, the zoo also mourned some losses. These included the female hyacinth macaw Rosi, two ruffed lizards, a Greek tortoise and two female nandu. The female capuchin monkey Braune and llama Giotta also died at an advanced age.
