The Education and Science Union (GEW) has given the Ministry of Education's package of measures to combat the shortage of teachers, which was introduced a year ago, a poor grade. "The package has neither solved the shortage of teachers nor improved working conditions at schools in the Free State," the union stated in Leipzig. Instead of sustainable solutions, the result is an increased workload, loss of quality and increasing frustration among employees.
"The way in which the package of measures was announced a year ago was already a serious mistake. The trade unions and experts from the school sector were not seriously involved," emphasized GEW head Claudia Maaß. Those who make education policy without the people in the schools may produce regional effects, but certainly no fundamental solutions.
