THW Kiel inflicted the first defeat in a competitive game on SC Magdeburg's handball team this season. The record champions won their home game against the Champions League winners 31:29 (10:12) in the Wunderino Arena, which was sold out with 10,285 spectators.
The best scorers were Lukas Zerbe from Kiel with nine goals and Tim Hornke with seven goals for Magdeburg. SCM remain top of the table with 38:4 points. Kiel, on the other hand, can continue to hope for a place in the top flight with 32:10 points.
Kiel keeper Andreas Wolff had to leave the field in the second minute after Felix Claar hit him on the head. His replacement Gonzalo Perez de Vargas immediately saved a seven-meter penalty from Omar Ingi Magnusson, but was not able to prevent the 4:8 deficit (19th minute). The home side failed to capitalize on its chances in particular. "The shots are justified, but poorly placed," said Head Coach Filip Jicha during a timeout.
