Toni Leistner will no longer take the field as an active professional soccer player. However, the former Berlin player could return to Hertha in a different role.

Toni Leistner has ended his career as a professional soccer player. The 36-year-old announced his retirement at an event hosted by the Stachelschweine at the Europacenter. “I’m 36; at some point, it’s time. I was still in good shape these past few years—maybe that made the decision harder—but right now I’m totally fine with it,” the former center back, who played 85 games during his final stint with Hertha BSC, is quoted as saying by “Bild.”

The Dresden native’s contract had expired at the end of the season and had not been renewed. Most recently, there were rumors that Leistner might join second-division promoted team Energie Cottbus as a free agent.

But instead of continuing to play, Leistner—who also played for Union Berlin, Hamburger SV, 1. FC Köln, and Dynamo Dresden, as well as in England and Belgium, has joined the DFB’s Players Pathway Management 2026 program. This program provides current and former players with support to launch a career in management within professional and youth soccer.

A return to Hertha is an option

“I am incredibly proud and grateful to be part of this special program, and I’m looking forward to the coming months, new perspectives, and connecting with inspiring people,” Leistner wrote on Instagram, “another step toward preparing myself for life after my playing career.”

This career path could also include a return to Hertha. The Berlin club had offered Leistner a position following the conclusion of the last season.
