"Deserves a few days off": Magdeburg Heads Into a Massive Break

With ten points from six games, 1. FC Magdeburg is doing quite well in the 2. Bundesliga—especially considering that the season began with a stinging 1-6 loss to Eintracht Braunschweig. Most recently, the team from Magdeburg headed into the international break with a 1-1 draw in Fürth, which coach Petrik Sander described as a “fair result.” 

Magdeburg’s Third-Best Start in Second Division History

Magdeburg’s third-best start in their Second Division history was all the more significant given the team’s performance last season. The Elbe City team has collected a full seven points more than in 2025 after the first six matches and built up a small cushion over the lower-ranked teams—primarily by stabilizing their defense. In the five games following their slow start, they conceded only three goals, and goalkeeper and captain Dominik Reimann has already recorded three shutouts in the league. 

While some players are traveling to join their national teams—Mateusz Zukowski (Poland), Pierre Nadjombe (Togo), Herbert Bockhorn (Uganda), and Luka Hyryläinen (Finland U21)—“the guys have earned a few days off,” Sander announced. After that, the focus in Magdeburg will likely be on refining the soccer approach modified by Sander. When should I take a risk, and when is a long pass the right solution?

More stable, but not yet flawless

The Magdeburg team has been finding the right answers to these questions more and more often lately—but still occasionally concedes unnecessary goals, as in the 1–2 loss in Berlin or, most recently, on Friday evening in Fürth. Ahead of the challenging matches against Hannover 96—now without former FCM coach Christian Titz—and at Dynamo Dresden, FCM would do well to address these weaknesses.

After all, Magdeburg has largely been spared from injuries so far. Only Lubambo Musonda will be sidelined for an extended period following an Achilles tendon tear sustained during preseason. Thus, despite players being called up for international duty, Magdeburg shouldn’t have any problems with a shortage of players in training. The Blue-Whites have now laid the foundation for a good season—and in the DFB Cup, the away match against FC Bayern at the end of October promises to be their greatest sporting challenge yet.
