The ThSV Eisenach handball team came very close to pulling off an upset to kick off the new Bundesliga season. Coach Sebastian Hinze’s team was leading at SG Flensburg-Handewitt on Friday evening until five minutes before the end, but ultimately fell short, losing 31:33 (18:20). In front of 6,300 spectators, Gian Attenhofer and Elias Scholtes were the ThSV’s top scorers with five goals each. The Eisenach team initially struggled defensively and quickly fell behind 5–8 (10th minute). After that, the visitors stabilized their defense, while Felix Aellen brilliantly orchestrated the offense. In a fast-paced back-and-forth, the Thuringians stayed in the game until halftime and even took the lead for the first time (21–20) after a 3–0 run early in the second half. Eisenach now forced a physical game and disrupted the hosts’ rhythm. Vukasin Antonijevic put ThSV ahead 30–28 (54th minute). In the closing minutes, however, the underdogs ran out of steam, allowing Flensburg to turn the game around. Copyright 2026, dpa (www.dpa.de). All rights reserved
