RB Leipzig have apparently found what they are looking for in Spain to strengthen their central midfield. As reported by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano and TV channel Sky, the Saxons are on the verge of signing Belgian Arthur Vermeeren from Atlético Madrid. The 19-year-old is said to have opted for Leipzig despite other options.
It is unclear whether the defensive midfielder will join Leipzig permanently or on loan. Originally, a loan was probably favored, but according to Spanish reports, Atlético would not be opposed to selling the European Championship participant.
Leipzig is forced to act due to the long-term absence of Xaver Schlager. The Austrian is suffering from a cruciate ligament rupture and will not be fit to play again until December at the earliest. Sporting director Rouven Schröder had said after the 1-0 win in the Bundesliga opener against Bochum that a new signing must be young and able to help in the short and medium term.
