Shoulder Surgery: Leipzig and the DFB Team Will Be Without Ouédraogo for Weeks

Assan Ouédraogo will be sidelined from Bundesliga club RB Leipzig and the national team in the coming weeks. The 20-year-old suffered a capsular injury to his right shoulder during the 5-0 home win against Hamburger SV. The club announced that the injury will require surgery and that Ouédraogo will be sidelined “until further notice.”

“Assan has had so much bad luck with injuries in recent years and has still fought his way back time and again,” sporting director Marcel Schäfer is quoted as saying in the press release, “which makes it all the harder that he now has to cope with yet another setback. We know how much work, determination, and passion Assan has put into his comeback.”

He made his comeback just last week

Since arriving in Leipzig in the summer of 2024, the talented player—who came up through Schalke’s youth system—has been repeatedly sidelined by injuries. In total, his time on the sidelines since July 2024 has already exceeded 380 days, with his knee often being the source of the problem. 

Ouédraogo had just made his comeback last week in the 1-4 Champions League loss to Como 1907 after recovering from a shoulder injury, coming on as a substitute in the second half. Against Hamburg, he was immediately named to the starting lineup.

The attacking player will therefore also miss the national team’s first matches under new head coach Jürgen Klopp in the Netherlands (September 24), against Greece (September 27), against Serbia (October 1), and in Greece (October 4).
