RB Leipzig has responded to Peter Gulacsi's departure by signing Norwegian World Cup goalkeeper Örjan Nyland. According to the club, the 35-year-old signed a contract through 2028 and completed his first training session with the team on Tuesday morning at their training camp in Saalfelden, Austria. Nyland joins on a free transfer, as his contract with Sevilla FC expired at the end of the season.
This is Nyland’s second stint with Leipzig. He was previously under contract with RB during the 2022–2023 season, appearing in three competitive matches and winning the DFB-Pokal with the team.
“After Pete’s departure, it was important to us to strengthen our goalkeeping staff with experience, personality, and athletic quality. Örjan brings all of that,” said RB sporting director Marcel Schäfer. “He knows the Bundesliga, our club, and major international matches. At the same time, he’s a positive presence who puts the team first and can offer our young players a lot through his experience.”
Although Nyland will wear the number one on his jersey, he was signed as the backup goalkeeper. Belgian Maarten Vandervoordt is slated to be the starting goalkeeper for Leipzig.
