Leipzig's handball team can barely avoid relegation. After Wetzlar's victory, there is only a theoretical chance of staying in the league. An ex-coach virtually seals the team's exit from the Bundesliga.

The SC DHfK Leipzig handball team now only has a theoretical chance of staying in the league. Following the 29:26 victory of fellow rivals HSG Wetzlar against HC Erlangen, the Bundesliga bottom club from Saxony is now four points behind the first non-relegation place with two matchdays to go before the end of the season.

Leipzig's ex-coach Sigtryggsson saves Wetzlar

Piquant: Leipzig's exit after eleven years in the first division was virtually sealed by an ex-coach. Runar Sigtryggsson was released after two and a half years in December and then took over Wetzlar. Now, the Icelander not only has a four-point lead with HSG, but also a goal difference that is 38 goals better.

The DHfK team of coach Frank Carstens still has to play TBV Lemgo (June 3) and hosts GWD Minden (June 7) on the last matchday. Leipzig have only won three games so far this season. Their last home win to date came against Erlangen on April 30.

In the 2nd division, Leipzig would face the Saxony derby against HC Elbflorenz, who narrowly missed out on promotion under Leipzig's former coach André Haber. A reunion with another former coach, Uwe Jungandreas, is also possible. The 64-year-old is currently fighting for promotion to the second division with EHV Aue.
