Cup defender Dynamo Dresden's elimination from the Saxony Cup was the only major surprise in the third round. The third-division club was eliminated after losing 3:1 after extra time at regional league side Chemnitzer FC. The second Saxon third division team, FC Erzgebirge Aue, struggled to a 2:0 victory at the regional division representative VfB Annaberg. Omar Sijaric and Kilian Jakob scored for last year's finalists.
Of the favored teams, only regional league team VfB Eilenburg was eliminated with a 1-0 defeat at FC Grimma. The other regional league teams advanced to the round of 16 more or less effortlessly. Lok Leipzig won 12:0 against Rotation Dresden, local rivals Chemie Leipzig defeated SG Weixdorf 3:0 and FSV Zwickau won 3:0 at SC Freital.
The draw for the round of 16 will take place on Tuesday from 4.00 pm (MDR Livestream).
