The first titles of the new handball season have been awarded: In Munich, the players of HSG Blomberg-Lippe and the pros from SC Magdeburg are celebrating their Super Cup trophies.

SC Magdeburg prevented Füchse Berlin from winning the Super Cup treble. The German handball champions defeated the club from the capital 38–31 (20–15) in a match played in front of a sold-out crowd at Munich’s SAP Garden, at times in impressive fashion, and claimed the title for the first time under head coach Bennet Wiegert.

Not even Berlin’s top star, Mathias Gidsel, could prevent the SCM’s ultimately comfortable statement victory ahead of the Bundesliga opener—despite his ten goals. For Magdeburg, Gísli Kristjánsson was the top scorer with nine goals. The SCM trailed the Cup champion—who had won their most recent matchup in the Champions League semifinals (40–35)—only once, when Matthes Langhoff scored the opening goal (0–1).

It works out for Wiegert on the fourth try

After three unsuccessful attempts, Wiegert should finally be able to make peace with the competition. After all, the Super Cup was the club trophy the 44-year-old had to wait the longest for. “For me, this title is very desirable, even if it doesn’t carry the same weight as the league championship, the cup, or the Champions League. We want to win this thing—especially against Berlin,” the successful coach had announced.

Without him as coach, the SCM had already won the trophy in 1996 and 2001—when the team last won the title 25 years ago, Wiegert was still under contract with Magdeburg himself.

In front of 10,199 spectators, his team left little room for doubt. Against the Berliners—who are struggling to adjust to major changes during the summer break following the departures of key players like Lasse Andersson and Dejan Milosavljev—the Magdeburg team quickly gained momentum.

Füchse Managing Director Bob Hanning had already stated before tip-off that he didn’t want to hear anything about a “transition year.” “That word makes me aggressive,” the official had said. While the club faces “major challenges,” he added, “this season is certainly not a stopgap.” As the 2025 champions and last season’s cup winners, the Berliners “always have high goals.” However, the flood of goals conceded should certainly give him pause for thought.

HSG Keeps Its Cool

HSG Blomberg-Lippe had already secured its first title of the season. Thanks to its composure, the HSG celebrated its first Super Cup victory following its first championship title in the Handball Bundesliga. In the 26–24 (9–9, 22–22) victory over cup champion Borussia Dortmund, the game wasn’t decided until the penalty shootout.

“We posed a few challenges for Dortmund, but we also made avoidable mistakes,” said coach Steffen Birkner. “In the end, I’m glad we won and took home the title. But I’m even more satisfied with the performance the team put on.”

Above all, goalkeepers Nicole Roth of Blomberg-Lippe and Dortmund’s Sarah Wachter shaped the game with their saves—especially during the low-scoring opening phase (3–1, 12th minute).

In BVB coach Kay Rothenpieler’s debut, both teams didn’t shake off their nerves until after halftime and capitalized on their chances at least a little more consistently. In the penalty shootout, Roth saved one shot, and Dortmund also hit the post once.
